MyPerfectAutomobile is reporting that the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is now the lowest-priced EV in the U.S. market. With a sticker price of $25,000 before any federal or state rebates, Smart is positioned to capture a significant percentage of the EV segment. In the first quarter of 2013, Nissan Motor Co. will introduce a lower-priced Leaf electric car. The automaker is hoping to reach its goal of selling 20,000 Leafs next year as a result of the price reduction and more efficient manufacturing methods. As a group, hybrid cars are getting less costly, according to recent pricing data. Toyota’s Prius took first place in the Rallye Vert de Montreal event, part of an international series of competitions for green cars.

Lowest Priced for EV: Smart Fortwo
For the 2013 model year, the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive car will be the lowest-priced electric vehicle available from a major manufacturer. Smart USA announced a sticker price for the Fortwo ED of $25,000 before rebates and incentives. The cabriolet model costs an additional $3,000. Nissan Motor Co. will offer a lower-priced Leaf electric car for 2013 in an effort to boost the company’s bottom line and introduce its cars to a wider demographic. Data Shows Hybrids Getting Cheaper
Several major automakers are increasing the number of hybrid models they offer. Toyota, for one, will almost double the number of hybrid cars it sells between now and 2015. As the cost of production for hybrid-drive vehicles continues to track downward, consumers now pay only about $2,500 more for hybrid cars than for comparable combustion models. Toyota Prius Plug-in Wins Montreal Rally
Toyota’s Prius entry took first place in the Rallye Vert de Montreal last week, which marked the second time in as many years that the Prius ended up in the winner’s circle at the event. Canada’s only venue for the FIA Alternative Energies Cup series, the competition ranks finishers based upon fuel efficiency and regularity (speed accuracy) during the 530-kilometer circuit.
