On October 12th, Rapid Recovery Solution, a debt collection agency, reacts to an article published by Livingston Daily, concerning a scam in Howell, Michigan where residents would receive fake debt-collection phone calls.
According to Livingston Daily, “the Howell Police Department is warning the public about recent bogus debt-collection calls circulating in the area.” Some of the phone calls are considered to be violent as in “some recent instances, that victims have been threatened with arrest if they don’t pay a debt.” According to the chief of police, “the department does not arrest individuals on behalf of a collection agency for nonpayment of private debt.” He went on to describe how the call happens exactly and what these fake debt collectors are saying to the public. He says that the caller “tries to obtain personal information by claiming to be a debt collector” and then continues to “threaten to put the individual in jail if he or she does not immediately pay.”
Some individuals were even able to make it seem like they were calling from the actual police station. The article explains how the individuals were able to “spoof” the phone so “the victim’s called ID then showed the Police Department’s phone number on two of the calls that were placed to the victim.”
