The triple Tony Award-winning musical (Best Musical, Book and Score) originally opened at the Barbican Centre in London in October of 1985. Currently, it is the second longest-running musical in the world after The Fantasticks, the third longest-running show in Broadway history, and the longest-running musical on the West End, followed by The Phantom of the Opera. In January 2010, the musical played its ten-thousandth performance at Queen’s Theatre in London’s West End and celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The production is based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo, which is widely considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century. The music was composed by Schönberg, and the lyrics were written by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, with an English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer. Set in early 19th century France, the plot follows the stories of many characters – including prostitutes, student revolutionaries, and factory workers – as they struggle for redemption and revolution.
Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in France, the story examines the nature of law and grace and elaborates on the political, social and moral history of France. It is considered historical fiction as it contains factual and historic events, as well as fictional characters who explore the different forms and inherent nature of both romantic and familial love.
