However, a rise in construction projects has led to an increase in job opportunities for civil engineers, according to a recent article from The Houston Chronicle. Raouf Balbaa, Canada-based engineering professional, explains that the rise in these projects is a great sign that more jobs will become available for experienced and new engineers alike. He also notes that these signs of growth may indicate a general upturn in the American economy as a whole.
As a professional who has worked in a variety of engineering professions since 1972, Raouf Balbaa knows just how many opportunities the industry can present for civil engineers. Recognizing the potential of the industry, Raouf Balbaa committed his studies to the field at the University of Alexandria where he earned both his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering. Providing an example of such career opportunities, The Houston Chronicle observes, “As the infrastructure in the U.S. ages, buildings, bridges and roads need to be repaired or replaced, and levees and dams upgraded. There will be growth in city rapid transit systems. These jobs are all for civil engineers.”
As many college graduates in America have expressed concerns about finding a job pending their graduation, the case is not the same for engineering students. In the article, Vita Como, director of the Career Center of the Cullen College of Engineering, at the University of Houston, reveals that, “all of the program's students who are looking for jobs are finding them and that salaries for new engineers are stable.”
Although Raouf Balbaa is encouraged by the increase of engineering jobs, he notes that it is still important for new engineers to focus on professional development if they want to remain successful in the business. Raouf Balbaa concludes, “There is no doubt that the demand for engineering graduates is on the rise. For well-rounded engineers, the ability to be logical and analytical is important. It is, however, equally important for the engineer to be able to communicate well with workers, supervisors and clients and have the ability to work in a team. An engineer who has the technical skills but lacks the ability to communicate those skills is disadvantaged.”
