ANYIAM-OSIGWE: THE SAGE HONOURED POSTHUMOUSLY

Come October 24th 2012, the Nigeria Philosophical Association will formally confer a posthumous award on Emmanuel Onyechere Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe honouring him as a credible authority on philosophical reflections.

He will be awarded the Professor Odera Oruka award on Sage Philosophy. Professor Odera Oruka is a distinguished African Philosopher in whose honour the award was instituted in recognition of his works on Sage Philosophy in Africa. Odera Oruka’s works on Sage Philosophy followed a series of intellectual works by African scholars who sought to debunk the claim of western scholars that Africans have no capacity for philosophical thoughts and have therefore no records of presentations that convey the imprints of vigorous philosophy. In response to this African academics argued that the limitations are not in the capacity of Africans to philosophise but in the fact that the method of documentation was not in the western pattern of writing.

The unveiling of the diaries of Emmanuel Onyechere Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe after his transition in 1998, revealed a large volume of scripts, which conveyed deep philosophical imports in various areas of philosophical enquiries. This is more so that he was not schooled in western philosophy.

It is acknowledged that his works have shown the limitations in the conception of early western scholars that Africans have no capacity for original philosophical thoughts and presentations.

The award is, therefore, a most worthy honour to a deserving African legend that we witnessed in the 20th century. His thoughts have been acknowledged as conveying deeper philosophical appraisals with new insights and perspectives.

His works which have been classified as Development Philosophy while interrogating the abstract, give practical focus to the interaction between the abstract or esoteric and the phenomena or material in providing for the wellbeing of the individual economically, socio-politically and spiritually.
