As part of the National Orthodontic Health Month recognized every October, Dr. Aaron Gilman, an orthodontist with Dental Associates of Connecticut, explained that their dental offices in CT have successfully launched an orthodontic program that puts children’s needs front and center.
“There is a real need to screen children between the ages of 7 and 10 for corrective braces, right at a time when they start losing baby teeth,” Dr. Gilman advises. “Screening at this age can minimize lengthy treatment later.” But conventional orthodontics screening at this age can be uncomfortable and scary for children.
Dental Associates of Connecticut has pioneered the use of digital impression technology for children under 10, which makes a model of a child’s mouth through computerized imaging, rather than relying upon impression molds that often create discomfort and fear for young patients. “The biggest advantage to using digital imaging at the right time in a child’s development is that children don’t need to undergo impressions that cause gagging and choking. Digital imaging uses a source of light that is safe. It gives us a clear and accurate picture of the anatomy of the child’s teeth so we can study how the child’s mouth and jaw are growing, helping us to predict potential dental problems, such as crowding, Dr. Gilman says. “It’s a way to help the child during the transition from baby teeth to adult teeth.”
An orthodontic screening includes measuring the mouth, jaw and location of baby teeth. Sometimes adult teeth do not have enough room to come in, creating a “traffic jam” in a child’s little mouth. An orthodontic screening at this critical time in a developing child’s life can detect and correct problems by moving teeth strategically to create more room in the mouth with braces, retainers or expanders, Dr. Gilman explains.
October is National Orthodontic Health Month, a time when orthodontists raise awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatments such as corrective braces. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, it’s never too early or too late to begin orthodontic treatment. Modern advances include “invisible” braces and other devices to correct bite issues, leading to a healthy smile and better living. The AAO recommends that children should receive their first screening no later than seven years old.
