The novel Natural Sciences Bibliographic Web Portal aims to provide comprehensive bibliographic information on the basic and applied life, earth and health sciences. The site has now
published over 1,090,000 references and has included the two new sections Germplasm and Hybrid. While the publishers target to publish a total of over 21 million references until 2014, the site currently publishes about 10,000 items every day. References contain a minimum of bibliographic information including title, authors, publication year and source and almost 50% of them additionally contain a summary of the publication's scientific content. All references are tagged with scientific keywords to cross-connect them.

Bad Honnef, Germany (PRWEB) October 24, 2012

The aim of the Bibliographic Web Portal including its two new Germplasm and Hybrid References sections is to provide comprehensive bibliographic information on the basic and applied life, earth and health sciences. The information contains a minimum of bibliographic information consisting of title, authors, publication year and source while expanded references provide an additional summary of the publication's scientific content. All references are grouped into eleven main sections which are subdivided into ten categories each. The site as well as every section and category provides RSS feeds alerting the site's users of newly published content. Every bibliographic reference is tagged with up to twenty scientific keywords which cross-connects them beyond sections and categories.

The section Breeding Technology contains information on the evaluation of the genetic value of domesticated animals or plants using best linear unbiased prediction and other methods. Animal breeding is the selection of animals with superior estimated breeding value in growth rate, egg, meat, milk, or wool production. Plant breeding is the art and science of changing the genetics of plants in order to produce desired characteristics. It can be accomplished through many different techniques ranging from simply selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation, to more complex molecular techniques. The latest content in this category is also available through a Breeding Technology RSS feed. The section currently contains circa 37,700 posts and is subdivided into ten categories including Chromosome, Crossbred, Genetic, Genotype, Germplasm, Hybrid, Lactation, Offspring, Phenotype and Resistance.

Within this section, the category Germplasm contains scientific information on germ plasm, the zone found within the cytoplasm of the egg cells of some model organisms, which in turn contains the determinants that will give rise to the lineage of the germ cell. The term germ plasm was first coined by August Weismann, the German biologist who formulated a germ plasm theory. The category currently contains circa 270 posts of which the latest inclusions are also available through a Germplasm RSS feed. It features a post on recent advances in the development of quality protein maize germplasm at CIMMYT, one on quantification of specific gene interaction effects between populations utilizing diallel information and a post on peach germplasm and breeding in China.

The new category Hybrid contains scientific information on hybrid, or the offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties. While the term hybrid refers to the offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties, in the study of biology and genetics, the term hybrid can be used in several contexts, but all them refer to the product of a sexual reproduction. This category currently contains circa 2,590 posts of which the latest inclusions are also available through a Hybrid RSS feed. It features references covering results and trends of development of studies on distant hybridization of fruit crops, production of hybrids using male sterility, prediction of three-way top cross sugarbeet hybrid performance, and the possibility of predicting the breeding value of hybrids and elite plants in spring bread wheat.

While the publishers of the web portal have a stock of 21,238,124 references of which 10,564,269 (50%) contain a summary, this information will be made successively available to the public until 2014. While the site has presently published a total of 1,089,800 posts online, the number of published bibliographic resources increases by 10,000 items every day. All items are interconnected with over 273,800 tags. The publishing status is reflected in the site's continuously updated tagline.
