The Betz family, owners of Penn Herb Company Ltd, proudly announce the building of a new herb store and apartment complex in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. Known as "Liberties Gateway", the new building will soon replace the existing store located at 2nd and Spring Garden.
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) August 05, 2012
For 88 years, Penn Herb Company, Ltd. has served customers with a wide variety of medicinal herbs, natural remedies and vitamins from around the world. Founded in 1924 by a respected naturopath, Dr. Konstanty Kalkosinski, the first Penn Herb store was located on Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. In 1940, Penn Herb moved to the current location at Second and Spring Garden in Northern Liberties. In 1962, the Betz family acquired Penn Herb and has continued to grow the business for the last 50 years.
That long-term growth has made it necessary to expand. Fifteen years ago Penn Herb moved their manufacturing, website and mail order divisions to a 46,000 sq. ft. facility on Decatur Road in Northeast Philadelphia. From here, hundreds of orders for herbs, spices and natural remedies are shipped daily to customers worldwide.
Penn Herb’s retail store has remained at Second and Spring Garden, where a loyal following of walk-in customers continues to pack the store regularly. “We wanted to give our customers a larger, more spacious store, with more choices and better product selection. It’s always been our desire to help educate our customers about herbs and natural remedies. A new, larger store will enable us to do this more fully,” says William Betz Jr., CEO and co-owner of Penn Herb Company, Ltd.
A new 5,000 sq. ft. store is planned that will feature an herbal tea bar, education area for guest speakers, lectures, and seminars. There will be interactive kiosks with comprehensive product information on herbs and remedies. Also, an on-site professional health center is planned featuring naturopathy, nutritional counseling and other alternative health practitioners.
The new building, known as Liberties Gateway, will be a three story mixed-use building totaling 35,000 sq. ft. In addition to the Penn Herb flagship store, there will be additional commercial space available. The upper floors will feature fourteen boutique apartments, many with unobstructed views of center city Philadelphia, and close to public transportation and everything Northern Liberties has to offer. The apartments will have secure underground parking, and will be serviced by an elevator.
Ronald and William Betz Jr, brothers and co-owners of Penn Herb, are committed to preserving natural resources and working for a cleaner environment. At their facility in Northeast Philadelphia, a 120 kW solar electric system was installed that powers manufacturing and customer service areas. The Liberties Gateway project is also being designed with energy efficiency in mind, and will be EPA Energy Star Rated.
The project is being developed by Penn Herb along with Nicholas Melisiotis from the Meli Group, a design build firm. Architectural design is being furnished by Harman Deutsch Architects.
Construction completion and the new store opening is scheduled for the first quarter of 2013. The planned closing date for the old store is August 10, 2012, and demolition will begin shortly thereafter. In the meantime, Penn Herb will serve customers out of the factory store at 10601 Decatur Road, Philadelphia and through their website.
