SSF’s end of the year schedule also includes the initiation of a public discussion around the value of professional sustainability certification focused around a set of core competencies.

The Security and Sustainability Forum announces the fourth session in the Urbanization series, “Climate Change is in our Business: Urbanization and Economic Growth in the 21st Century” will take place on November 15. Climate change is affecting businesses and entrepreneurs, and so is urbanization, given that cities are increasingly the engines of economic growth. The session will explore how the private sector can respond to the challenges posed and work to mitigate climate change and soften the negative effects of urbanization.
Also join us on November 27 for the beginning of a public discussion of the value and logistics of establishing a professional sustainability certification. SSF is partnering with the American Planning Association and the International Society of Sustainability Professionals to investigate the need for establishing certification by measuring the benefits of professional certification against the challenges of establishing industry standards. The session will look at what kinds of programs are currently available, from University certificate programs to non-profit association certification, and the emergence of for-profit companies offering certification. Business and municipal leaders will weigh in about how their organizations would value a professional certification in sustainability. Panelists will explore how stakeholders can work together to establish a common understanding of sustainability and, if desirable, the credibility and curricula necessary to offer cross-sector sustainability certification.
What are the models for business helping to create sustainable communities? On December 13, the session will convene practitioners from the UPS Foundation and other business service organizations to present case studies and share experiences and lessons learned. Join us to hear about what role the private sector has played in building resilience and learn about how businesses can contribute to disaster response and climate mitigation.
