Mr. Rooter's Tip Of The Day: Dry-fit the pieces before you measure so the pipe doesn't come up too short or too long!
Youngstown, Ohio (PRWEB) August 05, 2012
When measuring the length of a pipe between fittings that are already installed, according to Mr. Rooter, “Always measure the distance from the inside of one hub to the other.” Bob Beall, the most referred plumber in the Northeast Ohio and Southwest Pennsylvania regions, says, “Dry-fit the pieces before you measure so it doesn’t come up too short or too long.”
“Once it is known how long a pipe section is needed,” says Mr. Rooter, “cut the pipe to length (a cut-off saw is used in the example) using the procedures in today’s Mr. Rooter’s Daily Tip.” Beall offers free plumbing tips daily from Mr. Rooter Media Center. To subscribe just use the form at the top right corner of the Website. “To cut the pipe use a PVC saw, reciprocating saw, handsaw, miter box, or hacksaw,” says Beall, “if a cut-off saw is unavailable.”
According to Mr. Rooter, “Mark the pipe at the correct length and position it on the table of your cut-off saw, square to the blade and lined up so the blade cuts to the waste side of your marking.” Turn the saw on and pull the blade down to make the cut.
Mr. Rooter’s Tip Of The Day
Tip #1 Cutting plastic pipe normally leaves raised nubs of rough plastic. Using plumber’s cloth, sand the cut area to remove any edges and leftover pipe.
Tip #2 Place the pipe against the hub of the fitting and mark the hub depth on the pipe.
Tip #3 This mark will tell you how deep the pipe needs to be inserted into the hub. Dry-fit pipe and fitting together up to the insertion mark.
Tip #4 Add alignment marks if needed so the fitting will point the right direction once it is glued.
Tip #5 Apply primer to both pipe and fitting.
Tip #6 Be sure to use a large diameter dauber (about the size of a quarter) for the larger drainpipe. Apply glue to both pipe and fitting.
Tip #7 Insert pipe and fitting together.
Tip #8 Make sure the pipe is inserted all the way into the hub. Turn the pipe or fitting to proper angle if needed to align it to a specific direction or mark.
Tip #9 Hold for around a minute to keep the two together–otherwise they will pull apart.
