During the month of November for National Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, The Eye Clinic of Texas will offer free diabetic eye problem screenings.

Galveston, Texas (PRWEB) November 07, 2012

“Many patients with diabetes in greater Houston still do not adhere to vision care guidelines recommending a dilated eye exam every year,” commented Bernard Milstein, M.D. of The Eye Clinic of Texas. As November has been designated as National Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month this is an important time to spread the word about this potentially blinding disease. To that end during the month of November The Eye Clinic of Texas will offer free diabetic eye problem screenings at our Texas City office located at 7111 Medical Center Drive, Texas City 77590 on Mondays & Tuesdays from 8 AM-Noon and our Galveston office located at 2302 Avenue P, Galveston 77550 on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 AM-Noon. Patients just need to contact The Eye Clinic of Texas at 800-423-3937 and request an appointment for a free diabetic eye problem screening. We are hopeful all patients with diabetes will consider taking the best possible care of their eyes in order to preserve their eye health and vision.

Diabetic retinopathy does not only affect people who have had diabetes for many years, it can also appear within the first year or two after the onset of the disease. Diabetes can weaken blood vessels in the retina causing them to break down which causes swelling, hemorrhages and lipid deposits that can ultimately lead to vision loss. More ominous is the effect of the blood vessel breakdown and oxygen deprivation in promoting fragile new blood vessel growth that can easily break resulting in vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment and devastating vision impairment.

Patients can help to reduce the risk of developing diabetic eye disease by not smoking, controlling their cholesterol and lipid profile and blood pressure, as well as working to eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables and exercising.
