The BACDT respond to calls from the General Dental Council reminding individuals who decide to receive tooth whitening treatment to seek the advice from a dental professional.
(PRWEB UK) 8 November 2012
After the changes to the EU Council Directive came into force last month, the General Dental Council (GDC) has reminded patients who are considering teeth whitening treatment to seek the advice of a dental professional before hand.
The amendments to the EU Council Directive affect the strength of chemicals used in tooth whitening products, however they do not change the position of who can legally carry out the tooth whitening procedure. The GDC have reiterated their stance on continuing to prosecute individuals who carry out tooth whitening illegally under the Dentists Act 1994.
The council continues to regard tooth whitening under the practice of dentistry and must only be carried out by a registered dentist or a dental therapist or dental hygienist on the prescription of a dentist.
The Chief Executive and Register of the GDC, Evlynne Gilvarry stated the council had successfully prosecuted individuals for providing the treatment unlawfully and will not hesitate to prosecute in the future where there is evidence of unlawful practice.
The British Association of Clinical Dental Technology (BACDT), which promote the awareness and abolishment of illegal dentistry agree with the comments and discriminate against practices which illegally offer tooth whitening. Speaking on the behalf of the organisation Richard Daniels CEO stated, “Tooth whitening which is undertaken by unregulated individuals carries significant risks which could seriously endanger the patient.
“Research has found eight out of ten people would chose to have tooth whitening at a dental surgery, so I have confidence most people would seek advice before receiving treatment from a registered, trained professional.”
The BACDT is a leading professional association which promotes the advancement of ethical practice within clinical dental technology.
