Vlach, a police psychologist, who has done field work in Guatemala with his anthropologist wife, Norita Vlach, was dismayed with the stereotypical portrayals of the Mayan culture and history. "This book," he said, "is attempt to bring some light to this culture. Plus," he added, "its a hell of a war story."
The author, William Vlach, has published poetry, essays, and won awards for both his playwriting and parody. Cover artist, Guatemalan Emanuel Paniagua, who works with both paintings and sculpture, says about his work, "I was born into an aesthetic culture that has been crafted through centuries with artistic mastery in weavings, clay, stone. The distillation of this collective creation is our communal tradition — our patrimony."
Vlach will donate proceeds from the book to Guatemalan arts and children programs.
