August 8, 2012, marks the beginning of the school year for children all over the country. This gives My Positive Perspective a reason to help teachers better understand how they can maintain the interest of their students while keeping school “fun and interesting.” Former high school teacher and basketball coach, Eric Morton, notes the importance of having variety in teaching styles and incorporating them while instructing students. There is a difference between students being in school and receiving instruction time versus students being in school and not being able to learn because of class distractions. Therefore, teachers and parents need to know how they can maximize instruction time and minimize class distractions.
Morton explains that one of the first things teachers must do is identify the disruptive students as quickly as possible and single them out using discipline. The importance of this seems obvious, but the importance of this cannot be understated. The host of My Positive Perspective also wrote a book called "How Education can end the Cultural Problem." The book details examples of how children’s education improved when class distractions were minimized. The book also offers situations where a class’s education was lost because of one single student who constantly disrupted class. The contrasting styles of teaching where responsible for the different levels of instruction time because in the first situation, a teacher used discipline to gain respect from the students. However, in the latter example the instructor failed to incorporate discipline and struggled maintaining instruction time.
When asked what to do when a teacher notices his or her class losing control and compromising instruction time, Morton responds, “It is then the teacher’s job to inject some different teaching styles and methods.” This helps get the student’s attention back and forces them to concentrate on a new method of instruction. This is one way to limit class distractions.
