Benson [2], CPA, PFS has enjoyed a successful career filled with several significant accomplishments, leading to her inclusion in the distinguished ranks of leading professionals with Stanford Who’s Who. Over the course of her brilliant professional career, Karen has consistently demonstrated the passion, vision, and dedication necessary for to be mentioned among the elite. Utilizing her expertise in the areas of business consulting, employee benefit plans, tax accounting, personal financial planning, estate planning, and succession planning, Karen serves as a Partner at McGill, Power, Bell & Associates LLP, which is a regional certified public accounting firm with offices in Meadville and Erie, Pennsylvania. As one of the largest accounting firms in western Pennsylvania, McGill, Power, Bell & Associates, LLP (MPB) has been successfully serving the needs of clients since 1927. After 16 years of working for Arthur Andersen & Company, F.S. Fejes Company and in private practice in the Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Erie markets, Karen merged her practice into the firm in 1994. Although she provides services to clients in various industries, she particularly enjoys the unique challenges of the manufacturing sector. Karen, with her extensive tax background, is a key team member of MPB’s Research & Experimentation Tax Credit Service Group that has been very successful in assisting custom manufacturers in obtaining very significant tax credits. With increasing numbers of companies transferring ownership between generations or through mergers and acquisitions, MPB has been in the forefront of assisting parties through this M&A process, working hand-in-hand with legal counsel and brokers. Although quite challenging, Karen thrives on analyzing the tax and financial aspects of the deals and excels in the due diligence process. Evidencing her strength in the tax field, she is currently Chair of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Federal Tax Committee. Karen is also a respected leader and national speaker in the employee benefit plans practice area and serves on Employee Benefit Plan Committees of the (PICPA) and PKF North America. This very unique and specialized area of practice not only requires auditing expertise, but an understanding of the complex regulations of both the IRS and the Department of Labor. Karen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Grove City College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She is a Certified Public Accountant and has earned the designation of Personal Financial Specialist. As a result of her incredible success in the accounting field, Karen is the member of numerous prominent industry organizations. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants where she currently is serving a 3 year term on their Executive Council and has been on planning committees for national conferences educating professionals on Employee Benefit Plan topics. As an active member of the state PICPA, Karen currently serves on the Employee Benefits Committee (including the Technical Issues and Conference Planning Subcommittees) and the Federal Tax Committee where she is currently the Chair. Karen is also on the Employee Benefit Steering Committee for PKF North America and is active in her church and other civic organizations in Erie. She is a Financial Advisor in the practice of Collaborative Law helping clients through the difficult journey through a divorce; and is also a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and the Collaborative Professionals of NW Pennsylvania.
