There is beauty and colour in Sandeep’s world. His mom wears gorgeous saris – her pink and purple one is especially lovely – and his sister Deepa has decorated her hand a beautiful orange-red with henna. Heck, even Sandeep’s meals are colourful and tasty – his supper is a delicious vegetable curry spiced with golden turmeric and brilliant red peppers.

But on this particular day, Sandeep and his best friend Jake are seeing the darker side of the world around them. Someone has painted the grey walls of their community centre with hateful, nasty words and symbols. Something has to be done – and Sandeep and Jake know just what to do. They talk to the community centre manager, they enlist the help of the local paint-store owner and they round up some volunteers. Sandeep and Jake are about to do "Something Awesome!"
That’s the title of the new, beautifully illustrated children’s book from the creative pen of author Judy Woodhouse. She’s a children's author with a personal mission. She wants youngsters not only to learn to read – and enjoy reading – but she also wants them to learn about the world around them. She wants them to learn about people from distant lands who have chosen to make Canada their new home. She wants them to learn that, deep inside, people are the same the world over, even though we may not all look the same. That's an important lesson to learn – and Woodhouse hopes to teach it to youngsters through the sheer, simple pleasure of reading. Her previous titles, all very well received, include "Not Yet!," "Something Alive," "Maybe Even Pigs!" and "Something Is Missing."
The delightful "Something Awesome!" is aimed primarily at the pre-school set, although older children would also find it enjoyable. The book is lovingly illustrated by Robin Oakes with striking colour artwork by the team at X-Height Graphics Inc. Both Oakes and X-Height are frequent collaborators with the author.
Mary Trottier, an early literacy specialist, has this to say about Woodhouse’s creative tales: “These heartwarming stories of problem-solving are sure to delight the senses and nourish the brain. Vibrant cartoon illustrations capture the moods of children beautifully.”
Something Awesome! folllows along that same, warm-hearted, heart-warming path. It's a wonderful book for young children – they'll love the story, they'll learn to read and they'll learn something about our world and, with love and understanding, how we can along get along and live happily ever after.
