Los Angeles One of Most Deadly Places for Pedestrians and Bicyclists

Los Angeles remains one of the most dangerous places to walk or ride a bicycle. According to a study by the University of Michigan, Los Angeles pedestrians and bicyclists die at three times the national rate. Paul Nadrich of Nadrich & Cohen advocates for the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians in Los Angeles and all over
California.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 11, 2012

A University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute Study recently stated that Los Angeles remains one of the most dangerous places in the country for bicycle riders and pedestrians. According to the study, which compared data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the California Highway Patrol, and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, only New York City is a more dangerous place for these subgroups.

According to Michael Sivak, one of the co-authors of the study, the problem seems to be one of exposure. New York and Los Angeles walkers and bike riders simply have more traffic with which to contend. The more densely populated the area, the higher the risk of collision for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The study also found that nighttime was much more dangerous than daytime for these groups. In both cities, about one out of four accidents occurred between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

What Groups are Working for Pedestrian or Bicyclist Safety?

Several groups have been formed to help raise awareness of bicycle and pedestrian rights in southern California. For example, the Transit Coalition is a group that was formed to help with the transition from vehicle traffic to less environmentally damaging forms of transportation. Cal WALKS is an pedestrian advocacy group with ties to many California cities, and the California Bicycle Coalition is a similar organization designed to promote bicycle awareness. By supporting these groups, many of whom survive on volunteer labor and donations to meet expenses, everyone in California can have a part in keeping our bicycle riders and pedestrians safer.

Attorney Jeff Nadrich of Nadrich & Cohen observes, “Working for bicycle and pedestrian safety is not just an issue that affects those who bike or walk frequently, as so many people seem to think. We are all sharing our roads with cars, walkers, and bicyclists; if we all want to avoid accidents, the only way is to make sure that everyone has safe spaces in which to travel.”

Mr. Nadrich went on to say, “The next victim could be you, or it could be someone you hit. Whether you are the victim of a pedestrian or bicycle accident or whether you cause such an accident, the effects are life-long and devastating. It is time to stand up for the safety of all those who use our highways.”
