During October, retailers posted more than 2,000 online job ads for e-commerce skilled professionals, growing 9% year-over-year, according to WANTED Analytics™.
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 14, 2012
During October, retail organizations in the United States had more than 2,000 job ads available online that required e-commerce skills and experience, according to WANTED Analytics™ (http://www.wantedanalytics.com), the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. Online sales are becoming a more significant portion of total revenue and, to handle demand, retailers are building more robust websites, which are accessible through many channels. Overall hiring demand for e-commerce professionals has increased 9% compared to the same one-month period in 2011 and 40% versus October of 2010.
E-commerce skills are most often specified in technical, sales, and marketing occupations. Among the most commonly advertised job titles requiring an e-commerce background are Java Developer, Web Developer, Merchant Services Associate, Project Manager, Business Analyst, .NET Developer, and Marketing Director. IT and computer programming professionals often need to build or customize an e-commerce platform, while marketing skills are needed to drive traffic to the website, often with promotions.
The metropolitan areas where e-commerce professionals were most in-demand were Chicago, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston. While retailers in Chicago placed the highest number of job ads for this talent pool during October, one of the highest year-over-year growth areas was actually New York where demand grew more than 74% since October of 2011.
As hiring demand continues, the limited talent supply of potential candidates with e-commerce experience will create challenges for employers. According to the Hiring Scale™, Recruiters across the United States spend an average of 5.5 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for these positions. Each location will, however, experience a varying degree of difficulty when sourcing. Recruiters in Minneapolis, Minnesota and San Francisco, California are currently experiencing some of the most challenging overall recruiting conditions. Fierce competition among retailers to source candidates and fill positions has emerged in these two areas. For example, retailers in Minneapolis leave job ads online for an average of 7 weeks, meaning it is likely to take about 1.5 weeks longer to fill e-commerce positions than on average across the United States.
In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best metropolitan areas for recruiting retail professionals with an e-commerce background are Nashville, Tennessee and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently, hiring demand is lower in these areas, yet the talent supply remains larger. This means that Recruiters are likely to fill jobs requiring e-commerce skills faster than average.
The Hiring Scale measures conditions in local job markets by comparing hiring demand and labor supply. The Hiring Scale is part of the WANTED Analytics platform that offers business intelligence for the talent marketplace.
