Just two years short of its fiftieth anniversary, Lydgate Park is still considered to be one of the most family friendly beaches on the island.

The Fern Grotto Inn on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai recently carried out a survey of its guests, asking them which beach area they thought was the best for kids. Almost unanimously, the result was the same ¨Lydgate Park. Situated on the eastern side of Kauai, and close by to the Fern Grotto Inn vacation rental cottages, Lydgate Park has a friendly environment and wonderful facilities.
Just two years short of its fiftieth anniversary, Lydgate Park is still considered to be one of the most family friendly beaches on the island. Many locals are rightly proud of it, including Inn-Keeper, Paul Juma of Fern Grotto Inn, who was quoted as saying “I often direct guests staying at our vacation cottages to Lydgate Park, especially those with younger children. They all comment on how safe it is, and how easy the kids find it to swim there.”
The main feature at Lydgate Park is its artificial rock barrier which was built in 1964 due to the vision of Albert S. Morgan. It is this rock barrier which provides a sheltered swimming environment, with a shallow inner pool and a deeper outer one. The inner pool is perfect for parents who would like to teach their young kids to swim whilst on holiday, and the outer pool ideal for those that prefer to snorkel or fish.
Although the barrier was constructed in 1964, Lydgate Beach Park on Kauai is under constant improvement and maintenance. One example of this, is the attached Kamalani Playground which is located just to the north of the park. Built by over 7000 volunteers in 1994, it is a shining example of how well a community can work together. In fact, the area is still maintained by a local community group that actively encourage volunteers to devote their time in order to contribute to its upkeep.
October 27th saw National Make a Difference Day observed by The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park in style. Volunteers, including staff and even some guests from Fern Grotto Inn, spent the morning enhancing the public facilities, cleaning up, improving and adding further pieces of innovation. These same locals and tourists from around the world feel the benefits alike. A hardcore of volunteers also meet up every Saturday for beach cleaning sessions, which further goes to show their dedication to the community and environment.
Lydgate Park has a number of facilities and amenities that makes it an attractive place to visit for a day or more by the sea. A grass field is a popular place for tourists and locals to fly kites or throw a frisbee around, and several hiking and biking tracks criss-cross through the area. In addition to the Kamalani Playground, there is also another play area known as Kalamani Kai Bridge, which was in fact designed by the local kids themselves. The living story behind Lydgate Park is just as interesting as spending time there, and visitors on vacation in Kauai are encouraged to get involved as much as they can.
