Key Clubs compete for college scholarship money by taking online quizzes to test what they know about the mission and history of Kiwanis. The Key Club Challenge is a fun way to engage members and teach them about our club.

The Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation has launched the first Key Club Challenge in Florida. Two hundred and fifty high school students from eight schools in Broward County learned all they could about Kiwanis’ mission, history and objectives before taking an online quiz to test what they had learned. Each school was a team trying to earn scholarship money for their team members and the title Key Club Challenge Champions
The Key Club Challenge is a joint effort between the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation and South Florida Kiwanis clubs. The goal of the program is to increase high school students’ understanding of Kiwanis as an organization and what it means to be an active Key Club member. “I was a Key Club member in high school and had no idea it was part of Kiwanis,” said Daryl Hulce, president of the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation. “This project fits perfectly with our mission, it helps Kiwanis and is rewarding for the students.”
Each Key Club paid a $250 registration fee to participate which allowed every student at the school to be a team member. The fee includes participation in both the November and March quiz competitions. The highest scoring schools will be recognized as Key Club Challenge Champions and members of the winning teams will be awarded college scholarships. Partial funding for each school was made available through a Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation grant and the balance was paid by Kiwanis clubs or alumni sponsors.
“Competing against other schools seemed to be a challenging task, but I was thrilled to see that we pulled through,” said Dennis Bartoe from Piper High School. ”Mentioning the fact that they only had to take a multiple choice quiz for scholarship money persuaded most of our students to take it!” The program remains open and grant money is still available to any Key Club that would like to participate in March.
