With environmental issues on the rise, in a recent report it was found that producing two pounds of beef is more harmful than driving a vehicle, says motor vehicle report website VehicleHistory.com.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 23, 2012

According to a recent study in "New Scientist," the environmental impact of producing over two pounds of beef is greater than driving a car for three hours. VehicleHistory.com expands upon this notion and shares the latest news as environmental concerns are at the forefront of the U.S. political hotbox.

A research team from the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Japan looked at energy used and greenhouse gasses expelled at all steps of the beef producing process (raising calves, animal maintenance, transporting, etc.). The team found that it took 169 megajoules of energy to produce 2.2 points beef, or 9 quarter pounders.

The researchers also found that producing this amount of beef also gives off greenhouse gas emissions equaling 80.25 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the same as driving a car for 155 miles at 50 miles per hour.

Finally, the true ecological impact of producing beef is even higher than the research study found because the team did not factor in the energy or emissions used in managing farm equipment or transporting meat to distributors.

Animal agriculture produces a large among of pollution and consumes more water than plan agriculture. Though VehicleHistory.com doubts this will stop any meat lovers, it's interesting to see that driving to the next burger joint won't be as bad for the environment as eating the food itself.
