The Mathdots Kickstarter is an innovative project to help kids engage dynamically with math. Mathdots will use the magic and power of gestures on the iPad to create formulas and solve challenges

Full-time entrepreneur John Vasconcellos and his team in San Francisco are trying to raise $10,000 on Kickstarter to fund Mathdots, an iPad app to help kids with basic math using an innovative visual tool. The Mathdots Visual Calculator takes advantage of multitouch gestures, colors and sound to offer a new way to engage with numbers. Their focus is on kids just getting started in math that could benefit from a unique perspective and drive a deeper understanding of math fundamentals. In addition, they look to grow the app with more complex calculations over time using additonal iPad gestures and functions. The Mathdots Kickstarter project is seeking to:
- Keeps kids engaged with challenges and puzzles they solve by swiping the screen and using gestures
- Help visual learners see math in a way they've never thought about before
- Support advanced math functions by using increasingly complex gestures
For visual learners the Mathdots Visual Calculator shows what math operations really mean by showing the number of dots on the screen. Divide means less dots appear. Multiplication grows the number of dots and the board along with it. Operations can be seen above while the dots arrange themselves to equal the answer below. This makes it clear what all those calculations are really doing. Mathdots avoids just memorizing equations and helps students engage dynamically with math.
Benefits:
- Intuitive and visual new way to develop basic math skills
- Fun to use with iPad gestures, animation and sound
- See your math calculations in 3 ways: a running equation on the chalkboard, a numerical answer and as a group of dots representing the answer on the Mathdots board.
- Drag and tap are the way kids know how to use a computer with no training
