Local business review site 5StarControl takes on the topic of small business marketing errors to sidestep.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2012

5StarControl has decided to issue an announcement about local business online marketing – 5 things to avoid doing. Reputation management site 5StarControl announced that small businesses are going to suffer if they regularly perform any of these common marketing mistakes.

James Debono of Business2Community lists 5 goofs in small business marketing strategies that can cost owners in missed revenue activity. These mistakes include failing to monitor what’s being said about your business online, spreading yourself too thin in terms of using every new marketing tool that comes along, and failing to constantly update your online presence. Small Business owners who avoid these errors could see impressive results from properly managed online marketing campaigns.

Reputation management is a key factor in creating and maintaining a favorable first impression for new consumers researching your products and services. Debono reports that small businesses often fail to track what is being said about them online. Because the number of consumers actively searching for information about a company online is growing, failure to manage what customers are saying about your business can negatively impact the amount of new and repeat business you receive from local consumers, he states. Online review sites such as Yelp and Angie’s List offer customers the opportunity to leave feedback about their shopping experiences. 5StarControl recommends using Yelp as part of any business’ online reputation management plan, along with the teachings of Frank Kern, a popular internet marketing expert, as an important part of any online marketing strategy. Local business owners who create and maintain profiles on review sites like Yelp stand a better chance of creating a positive first impression with consumers, as well as being able to monitor and address what consumers are posting about their products and services, which can potentially make them great marketing tools.

According to Debono, there are an increasing number of online marketing tools that are “touted as the next big thing.” Too often, local business owners hop on the band wagon of every new online marketing tool or platform without due consideration given as to whether it will actually enhance their marketing strategy. He suggests business owners research what social media outlets their customers are using and tailor their marketing strategy to those sources.

5StarControl states that limiting the number of social media websites businesses subscribe to, based on their consumer research data, can be just as effective and less time consuming than using every new marketing tool or platform that comes along. This ties in quite effectively with Debono’s message that the use of online marketing tools and platforms should be based on quality, not quantity.

Another big no-no small business owners commonly make, Debono reports, is not constantly reviewing and tracking their online marketing strategies to see what is working and what needs to be adjusted or abandoned. In order to maximize the effectiveness of local online marketing programs, small business owners must continually find ways to “engage with the community.” In line with that, local business review site 5StarControl reports that keeping a business’ online content about their products and services fresh is another way to effectively harness consumer interest, in addition to avoiding these common small business marketing bloopers.

5StarControl is a website on small business concepts in the area of reputation management.
