Marina Erakovic and Heather Watson Win Doubles Title

The 2012 Texas Tennis Open, which featured many of the top Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) professional tennis stars, crowned a new champion as world-ranked No. 23 Roberta Vinci of Italy defeated former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in a classic Friday night final, 7-5, 6-3.
“We are extremely pleased to have two great players in our final tonight,” said Chris Giordano, Texas Tennis Open Tournament Director. “Both Jelena [Jankovic] and Roberta [Vinci] played a phenomenal match and put on a wonderful showing for our fans. My congratulations go to Roberta for playing a fantastic match and beating a former world-ranked No. 1 player.”
This was the fourth time that Vinci and Jankovic have played in their careers, with Jankovic winning the three previous matches. The most recent match was at the 2009 U.S. Open, where Jankovic defeated Vinci 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles action, Marina Erakovic of New Zealand and Great Britain’s Heather Watson defeated American Irina Falconi and Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere 6-3, 6-0. This is the second title this year for Erakovic and Watson as they won the Bank of the West Classic in California in early July. Both Erakovic and Watson also competed in the London Olympics for their respective countries.
The 2nd annual Texas Tennis Open, which is part of the WTA tour, is an “International Level’” tournament with prize money of $220,000, featured a singles draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16 teams. The tournament, hosted a compendium of top-ranked, international players including Jelena Jankovic (21), Roberta Vinci (23), Peng Shuai (30) and Sorana Cirstea (43).
