One of the latest articles presents a multilevel analysis identifying the socioeconomic status and tobacco consumption among adolescents in Argentina. Students attending schools receiving social assistance were more likely to smoke and to purchase loose cigarettes, whereas school poverty was significantly associated with secondhand smoke exposure. Unfavorable contextual school characteristics are associated with tobacco consumption and related measures among youth in Argentina. Another article on tobacco use highlights smokeless tobacco and its relation to panic disorder, major depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder in American Indians. Although approximately 30% of American Indian tribal members were lifetime users of smokeless tobacco, the association with lifetime psychiatric disorders was not as strong as those observed with cigarette smoking. The category also features an article on how exposure to acute electromagnetic radiation of mobile phone alters transiently skin homeostasis. The authors investigated the effects of mobile phone exposure on a model of pigmented skin. Their results indicate that exposure to 900 MHz frequency induces a transient alteration of epidermal homoeostasis, which may alter the protective capacity of the skin against external factors.
