Orlando Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey M. Hartog Presents Findings in Using Ultrasound to Monitor Success of Fat Used as an Alternative in Breast Reconstruction at IFATS 2012.

Dr. Jeffrey M. Hartog, M.D, D.M.D, a board certified plastic surgeon and the first FDA Registered Plastic Surgery Fat Bank owner in the United States, shares his findings on using an ultrasound as a method of monitoring fat grafting to the breasts.

(PRWEB) October 15, 2012

Dr. Jeffrey M. Hartog, (http://www.facebook.com/LiquidGoldFatGrafting) an Orlando, Florida board certified plastic surgeon and Liquid Gold, are the first U.S. FDA Registered plastic surgery fat bank to use fat removed with liposuction that can be cryopreserved and stored indefinitely for future use in aesthetic or breast reconstructive surgery.

Driven by an interest in natural alternatives to synthetic implants, the fat grafting market has grown considerably over the last several years. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) 2011 Procedural Statistics, fat grafting procedures in the U.S. have increased 19% in 2011 over 2010 with more than 68,000 procedures performed annually.

Dr. Hartog presented “High Definition Ultrasound Monitoring of Cryopreserved and Fresh Fat Grafts in Breasts,” at the October 2012 and 10th Annual International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science (IFATS) meeting in Quebec City, Canada. In his talk, Dr. Hartog stressed the need for a simple, cost-effective method to monitor graft survival and assess clinical stability, particularly for breast reconstruction after cancer, in which multiple procedures are often required, suggesting that cryopreserved fat has significant potential advantages for multiple procedures if it can be shown a viable option.

According to Dr. Hartog, “Ultrasound, appears to be an excellent cost-effective alternative to MRI for serial evaluation and monitoring of fat grafting to the breasts when either fresh or cryopreserved fat is used as an alternative to breast reconstruction after cancer.” Dr. Hartog mentions, “although further studies are needed to measure comparative fresh vs. banked fat, cryopreserved fat is viable when used in breast reconstruction with no apparent increase in complications or fat necrosis.”
