“Set no limits” was the inspiring message ringing in the ears of employees at M&I following a presentation from Paralympic Bronze Medalist Matt Walker.
(PRWEB UK) 17 November 2012
M&I first met Matt earlier this year, after deciding to allocate sponsorship to a local athlete. Following his success in this year’s games, Matt was keen to meet the staff and began by thanking the captivated audience for their support which he felt was an important contribution towards him winning his bronze medal.
Matt gave many fascinating insights into his career so far, from his entertaining tale about receiving his MBE from the Queen to describing his emotions standing on the podium, clutching a picture of his late father, knowing how proud he would be that his son had won yet another paralympic medal.
Matt has ataxic cerebral palsy, and is classified S7 by the International Paralympic Committee, which means he competes in freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events against swimmers with similar physical impairments. His typically upbeat view is that he sees his classification as a positive – saying that if he were classified higher, at S13 for example, it would be that much harder!
Matt’s zest for life and fun approach was clear as he played the video of his bronze medal race joking, “I am winning here, I am still winning here, I am winning here…ohh I am not winning here”. His steely determination became evident as he summed up for the audience by saying, “If I can achieve my goals, so can you. Be the best that you can.”
Matt stayed on through the afternoon to answer questions from the group about his training schedule, what it was really like in the athlete’s village and his race. He also had on display his vast collection of medals which he encouraged people to pick up and try on.
Speaking after the event, Managing Director Giles Salt said,
“To win a medal at the Paralympics is a great achievement but especially after the devastating loss of his father just a month before the race – Matt is a truly inspirational individual and he has definitely inspired our team at M&I.”
