The International Association of Healthcare Professionals has carefully selected Geoffrey B. Higgs, MD, to represent orthopedic surgeons in their publication, The Leading Physicians of the World. Dr. Higgs’s selection is a significant representation of his passion and dedication for the field of orthopedic surgery. He is considered to be among the best with nearly 20 years of practice. Dr. Higgs maintains a position at Advanced Orthopedic Centers in Richmond, Virginia. At the private practice, Dr. Higgs utilizes his extensive background in sports medicine, shoulder surgery, and knee surgery; with specific expertise in complex shoulder reconstruction for rotator cuff injury, shoulder instability, acute traumatic shoulder injury, and knee ligament reconstruction, to name a few. In his career, he has served as Team Physician for Harvard University Athletic Teams, the New England Patriots Professional Football Team, and the Boston Bruins Professional Hockey Team. Currently, Dr. Higgs is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. He is the Chief Team Physician for the Richmond Raiders Professional Arena Football Team, and has been the Chief Team Physician for each Professional Arena Football Team in Richmond. Dr. Higgs also has an affinity to community service and serves as the team physician for local high school athletic programs. As well as practicing medicine, Dr. Higgs is an extensively published author in medical literature and has lectured at numerous national and international meetings. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in systems engineering at the University of Virginia prior to attending medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, receiving his degree in 1988. He continued his education at Columbia, completing his internship and residency there; during which he served as Chief of Physicians for the world renowned teams of Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden. Dr. Higgs is Fellowship Trained and Subspecialty Certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also served his active duty obligation for a medical school academic scholarship as a Major in the U.S. Army, where he became a highly decorated officer and served as an orthopedic surgeon internationally. For all of his achievements and successes, he has been honored with many awards such as the Frank E. Stinchfield Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery.
